In a latching means for hatch covers including fittings 3 adapted for co-operation with the cover 2 and a rod 4 running along the coaming 1 for actuating a number of said fittings, each fitting comprises a first lever 10, which in closed position (Figs. 2 and 3) reaches below the rod 4 to which it is articulatedly connected by means of a link 14, and a second lever 12 swing- ably connected to the rod at 13 as well as to a bracket 11 in the coaming arranged above the rod, said members being arranged in such a manner that a horizontal movement of the rod along the coaming will bring about a vertical displacement of the rod (cf.
