Apparatus for collecting sheets of paper comprises a collecting cylinder 2, endless belts 9 cooperating with the cylinder 2 for holding the sheet being collected against the periphery of the cylinder, variable speed drive means 11, 12 and 13 for the endless belts 9, a feeding and discharge guide 3 for guiding the sheets on to the cylinder one by one and off the cylinder in stacks, and control means for controlling the number of sheets collected on the cylinder and the discharge of the associated sheets therefrom. Continuous belts 7 feed sheets cut from a continuous web by a rotary cutter 8, to the collecting cylinder. A photo-electric device 14 detects any misplacement of sheets on the cylinder 2, and regulates the gearing 13 via a servomotor (not illustrated) to vary the slip of the belts 9 to align the sheets collected. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the control means includes a cam disc 19 coupled for rotation with the cylinder 2 and a counting mechanism 6. In operation, when the guide 3 is in the feeding position, Fig. 1, an electromagnet 22 is energized keeping a cam follower or roller 18 out of contact with the cam 19. When the last sheet collected has been sensed by a photoelectric device 24 and counted, the mechanism 6 de-energizes the magnet 22 by operating a switch 23, and roller 18 is brought into contact with the cam 19 by a compression spring 20. This enables the guide 3 to be moved into the discharge position as soon as the roller 18 rolls off the raised portion 25 of the cam 19. The switch 25 is operated only briefly during the time the raised portion 25 and the roller 18 will co-operate, but due to the increased air gap, the armature 21 of the magnet 22 is not attracted to raise the roller 18 from the cam 19 until itco-operates again with the raised porttion 25. The guide 3 is then moved to the feeding position and maintained there. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the magnet 22 and armature 21 are placed by electromagnetically operated bolt to maintain the roller 18 out of contact with the cam 19. Also, the counting mechanism may be operated by the collecting cylinder co-operating with an inductive impulse giver 29. In a third embodiment, Fig. 3, the counting mechanism 6 is coupled to the shaft 1 of the cylinder 2 and closes a switch 40 after a certain number of revolutions of the collecting cylinder 2. This completes a circuit from a source 33 by a brush 32, slip rings 31, contact 35 and lead 38 through a solenoid 37 which in turn moves the guide 3 to the discharge position and closes a switch 41. The guide 3 is not returned to the feeding position by compression spring 20 until the circuit is completed through an electromagnetically operated bolt 45 via contact 35a and lead 39.
