[Also in Division F2] A tool holder for use with an electric or compressed air hammer comprises a body 1 having a conical bore 1b, Fig. 3 (not shown) for the tool D and a spindle 2, a distance-piece 3 being provided between the support and spindle for selectively holding them in an axially-spaced operative position and allowing their relative movement to such an extent that the support shank can eject the tool from the support body. The spindle is formed with a pin 2a slidable in the body 1 and provided with a pair of slots 2c in which the ends 5a of a handle 5 are located. In operation the tapered end of a tool D is mounted in the body and the distance-piece positioned between a shoulder 2b of the spindle and the body 1. In order to remove the tool, the distance-piece is removed and, by means of the hammer H and slots 2c, the end of the pin 2a is driven against the tool. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the distance-piece 13 is rotatable on the spindle 12 by means of a rubber-covered sleeve 17, the distance-piece having lugs 13d which, during a driving operation, engage with corresponding lugs 11e on the body. To remove the tool, the sleeve is rotated in order to allow the lugs 13d to slide in recesses formed in the body thereby permitting the end of the spindle to strike the tool; the distancepiece is retained in its two positions by means of a spring-loaded ball engaging in spaced detents. Chips pass from the cutting edge of the tool through the centre thereof and escape through ports 1c, 11c in the tool body. |
