Coating apparatus for applying coatings, particularly light-sensitive coatings, to film, paper or other webs in superposed relation comprises a hopper having cavities from at least one of which coating solution is delivered along a duct into a discharge slot and from at least one other of which solution is fed to an inclined surface intersecting the discharge end of the slot at an acute angle. As shown a hopper 210 is made of assembled blocks defining cavities 250, 251, 252 to which coating solutions are supplied by metering pumps P. Cavities 250, 251 communicate by slots 259, 241 which meet at an acute angle, and cavity 252 has a discharge slot 244 leading to an inclined surface down which a layer of solution flows to meet layers emerging from slots 259, 241, the layers entering a bead 217<SP>1</SP> from which they are applied in superposed relation to a moving web W. In a modification the lower part of the hopper may have one cavity only. The hopper is carried by a frame pivotal about the roller 13 carrying the web W and securable by means of a screw and an arcuate slot, the hopper being adjustable in the frame angularly and toward and away from the web. In a further modification the lower part of the hopper has a single cavity divided by an adjustable vertical partition to permit the delivery through the discharge slot of two superposed layers of coating solution, and the upper part of the hopper has two cavities one of which delivers to an inclined surface such as 245, the other; placed at a higher level, delivering to a similar surface above and offset from the first such that two superposed layers of solution are delivered to the bead 217<SP>1</SP> to join the two layers emerging from the discharge slot. The hopper may contain heating or cooling channels and the coated web may be chilled before passing through a drying chamber. |
