PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin composition for a friction material having excellent mechanical characteristics or heat resistance without deteriorating brittleness of a phenol resin. SOLUTION: The phenol resin composition is characterized as comprising the phenol resin and metal oxide sol. The content of the metal oxide sol is preferably≥0.3 to≤20 wt.% based on the solid content of the phenol resin. The metal oxide sol is obtained by using water and/or an organic solvent as a dispersion medium. The primary particle diameter of the metal oxide sol is≥3 to≤100 nm.
