The receiver has an error signal generator (12) connected with an output of a phase rotator and a detector for producing a phase error signal. A loop filter is connected with an output of the generator to filter the error signal and for supplying the filtered phase error signal to the phase rotator. The phase rotator is included behind the correlator, such the received signal passes to the correlator before passes to the phase rotator. The phase error signal depends on the carrier frequency offset of the input signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for a carrier frequency offset compensation in a spread spectrum receiver for receiving and decoding an input signal.
