The press has a pressing channel (6) and a pressing ram (4) which moves to an fro in same through a filler chute (2) which is open at the top. A cording device mounted at the pressing channel wraps cords (27) round the finished bales (16,24). A pressing wall (17) is fitted to move into the pressing channel to shut off same. The pressing wall moves into the pressing channel at a distance of at least one bale length from the filling chute. The pressing wall is provided on the side remote from the filling chute with a contact pressure plate (25) which has cording channels (26) which open towards the end face.
