A liquid crystal display enables bright displaying without using the birefringence. The liquid crystal display is characterized in that it comprises a first substrate, a second substrate, a reflective polarizing plate disposed on the first substrate, having a first transmission axis and a first reflection axis both of which are perpendicular to each other, and capable of transmitting the linear polarization having a vibration plane parallel to the first transmission axis and reflecting the linear polarization having a vibration plane parallel to the first reflection axis, a polarizing plate disposed on the second substrate, having a second transmission axis, and capable of transmitting the linear polarization having a vibration plane parallel to the second transmission axis, and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first and second substrates and having a first mode in which the polarization direction of the incident light is changed using the birefringence and a second mode in which the polarization direction of the incident light is kept from being changed not using the birefringence, and in that bright display and dark display are switched by voltage application to the liquid crystal layer, thus allowing the liquid crystal layer to perform bright display by setting the liquid crystal layer to the second mode.
|
