PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera and a digital still camera which detect the occurrence of light leakage when photographing to avoid a failure in photographing. SOLUTION: When a shutter switch is turned on to indicate photographing in a photographing standby state of the digital still camera, a photographing operation is performed with a shutter closed, and luminance Y' of a photographic image obtained through an imaging device and a signal processing part composed of a circuit for signal processing is detected, and the luminance Y' obtained with the shutter closed is compared with reference luminance Y which is preliminarily stored in a memory and is luminance of a photographic image in an environment having no light source, to determine whether light leakage occurs or not, and an error message is displayed on a LCD to give a warning of light leakage in the case that light leakage is determined to occur.
