PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which can enlarge a dynamic range of light input while reducing influence of manufacturing dispersion of a photoelectric converter and a transfer transistor, and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: The solid state imaging apparatus is constituted by disposing a unit picture element consisting of a photoelectric converter 401 for accumulating signal charge generated by incident light, a transfer 405 for transferring signal charge, a floating diffuser 403 whereto signal charge is transferred and an amplifier 404 for outputting amplified signal based on signal charge transferred to the floating diffuser in a plurality of lines. Each picture element separately has a charge retainer 402 which accumulates all the charge from immediately after exposure start to a certain time T in one exposure period.
