Ram actuated automated security gate

A security gate 10 for controlling access to an entrance comprises a panel 20 for blocking the entrance, a drive unit 70 for opening and closing the gate 10 and a control unit 110 for controlling the drive unit 70. The panel 20 has a proximal edge 50 and a distal edge 60 and is arranged to rotate about a substantially vertical axis at or near to its proximal edge 50. The drive unit 70 comprising a ram 120 arranged to rotate the panel 20 about said axis by applying a force at or near the proximal edge 50, such that the gate 10 opens or closes in less than 5 seconds.
