PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct acting one-way clutch having a high load capacity and capable of locking a rod in one-way direction. SOLUTION: A plurality of track faces 6 each having an arcuate cross-section and extending in the axial direction are formed in the inner peripheral surface of a housing 1. A ring 8 is fitted in the outer periphery of the rod passed through the housing 1, and the ring 8 is divided into a plurality of sections in the circumferential direction to form a plurality of divided rings 8a. A concave surface 10 arcuate in cross section and tilted in the axial direction is formed to form a wedge space between the track surface and the surface itself in the outer periphery of the divided ring 8a, and a ball 15 is installed between the concave surface 10 and the track surface 6. The ball 15 is retained by a retainer 11, and the pressing force of an elastic member 16 is applied to the retainer 11 to urge the retainer 11 in the direction of press-fitting the ball 15 in a narrow part in the wedge space. When the axial force in one way is applied to the rod 3, the ball 15 is engaged with the track face 6 and the concave surface 10, and the divided rings 8a are pressed against the cylindrical outer peripheral surface 7 of the rod 3 to lock the rod 3.
