PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a chain tensioner capable of preventing foreign objects from being included into a certain part, in which foreign objects are stuck on, such as a saw screw-toothed surface, a check valve, and relief valve included in an inner structure of the chain tensioner and removing the foreign objects when supplying working oil by means of a filter member having greater force exceeding resistant force of foreign objects against flow resistance of the working oil. SOLUTION: The chain tensioner comprises a plunger 13 being slidable in a housing 11, a tension adjustable spring 16 giving projecting capability to the plunger, a male screw 15<SB>T</SB>formed on a screw rod 15, and a damping mechanism which can buffer shocks caused by a screw engagement means formed by a female screw 15<SB>N</SB>on an inner periphery of the plunger 13. The filter member 23 is arranged on a oil supply passage prepared on a closed end side of the housing 11 so that flow of foreign objects having designated grain sizes or over is prevented. Any influence caused by the foreign objects on an operation of the filter member is prevented so that the flow resistance of the working oil is kept to be greater than the resistant force of the foreign objects against the filter member 23, and resistant force of the filter member 23 against the flow resistance can be maintained.
