Wedge for splitting up book blocks in a bookbinding machine

A method for dividing a book block into two equal halves has the book block (1) carried under and overhead transporter and moved onto a splitting wheel (10) with a ridge shaped profile. The wheel has a ridge angle of about 130 deg. and is provided with a low friction coating. The wheel setting and penetration, into the block, is adjustable and opens the block for the parting tool (3) to divide the block with no damage risk to the leaves. The design is suitable for all types of leaves including thick card, e.g. for children's books.
