A speedometer (310) is used to record a vehicle speed (v) and a comparator (320) is used to compare the recorded speed with a threshold speed (vCITY). If at a given time (t 0) the recorded speed is less than the threshold speed then a traffic situation classification unit (330) is used to calculate a left wheel path (SL) covered by the left front wheel (210) of the vehicle over a measurement period (T) after the given time (t 0), calculate a right wheel path (SR) covered by the right front wheel (211) of the vehicle over the same measurement period (T) and calculate the difference between these two distances. If the difference exceeds a threshold value (SCITY) then at least measurement period (T) is defined as an interval (ICITY) during which the vehicle has encountered a city traffic situation.
