PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand an output rotation range, by changing a piston speed in the vicinity of the top dead center, in a Brayton cycle engine having a piston reciprocating in a cylinder and burning and expanding fresh air by supplying the fresh air of high pressure in the vicinity of the piston top dead center. SOLUTION: This Brayton cycle engine has the piston 322 reciprocating in the cylinder 323, a supercharging means 2 arranged in an intake system and supplying air of higher pressure than atmospheric pressure to the cylinder 323, an intake valve 212 arranged in the cylinder 323, opening and closing when the piston 322 exists in the vicinity of the top dead center and adjusting a supply quantity of the air supplied from the supercharging means 2 to the cylinder 323, an operation state detecting means 50 for detecting an engine operation state, and a piston adjusting means 30 for changing a moving speed of the piston 322 on the basis of the detected engine operation state.
