PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus capable of reducing distortion of a picked-up image by performing interframe hand-shake correction and intraframe hand-shake correction in an image pickup apparatus employing an X-Y address type image pickup element. SOLUTION: This method is a method for correcting the distortion of the picked-up image due to positional change of the image pickup element in horizontal and/or vertical directions of the picked-up image at the time of photographing. An interframe correction amount corresponding to the positional change of the image pickup element is calculated in a frame period of the picked-up image, and the distortion is corrected so that the positional deviation of the picked up image between adjacent frames may be eliminated on the basis of the interframe correction amount. The intraframe correction amount corresponding to the positional change of the image pickup element is calculated in a plurality of positions in one screen of the picked-up image, and the distortion of the picked-up image due to positional change in the one screen of the picked-up image is corrected on the basis of the intraframe correction amount.
