PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe allowing flexible layout excellent in the working efficiency of a worker. SOLUTION: This lathe 1 is provided with a bed 10, a headstock 11, a spindle 12, a tailstock 14, a tailstock spindle 15, tool rests 20 and 30 and a cutting chip collecting device 60, etc. The bed 10 is formed into a rectangular shape in a top view and formed symmetrically with respect to a symmetrical surface having a vertical outside shape of the width direction of the bed 10, and formed with a cutting chip discharge hole 10b opened in an upper surface between the headstock 11 and the tailstock 14 and formed in the vertical direction and four insertion ports 10c formed in the horizontal direction and having one side communicated with a lower part of the discharge hole 10b and the other side opened to each side surface. The headstock 11 and the tailstock 14 are arranged on the upper surface of the bed 10 so that axes of the spindle 12 and the tailstock spindle 15 may be included in the symmetrical surface. The tip of a discharge mechanism 61 of the cutting chip collecting device 60 is inserted from one of the insertion ports 10c and arranged on the lower side of the cutting chip discharge holes 10c.
