PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell equipped with a fuel electrode including a diffusion layer having carbon paper to which water repellent characteristics are given in superior balance. SOLUTION: This fuel cell is equipped with a single cell having a film shaped electrode unit which includes an electrolyte membrane, and includes the fuel electrode which is constituted by arranging a catalyst layer and the diffusion layer in this order on one face of this electrolyte membrane, to which a methanol aqueous solution is supplied as the fuel, which includes an air electrode which is constituted by arranging the catalyst layer and the diffusion layer in this order on the other face of the electrolyte membrane, and to which an oxidizing gas is supplied. At least the diffusion layer of the fuel electrode out of the fuel electrode and the air electrode has the carbon paper in which carbon fibers are laminated. In the fuel cell, a specific water-repellent polymer has been coated on or filled into at least one part selected from the fiber surface, the surface layer of the fiber, and voids between the fibers.
