An air inlet duct, leading from a lateral surface 1 of a cylinder head, and a chamber 12, to which the duct leads, are shaped to promote swirl of the air admitted to the cylinder. At its downstream end the duct centre line 18 veers away from the extended cylinder radius 9, which is perpendicular to the line joining the inlet and exhaust valve axes 4 and 10 respectively, and passes the inlet valve axis 4 on the side thereof remote from the cylinder axis 6. The outer (with respect to the cylinder axis) wall 14 of the chamber 12 is a smooth continuation of the duct, and from this wall 14, the upper chamber wall 13 slopes helically to the inner side of the chamber and towards the cylinder. The cross-section of the duct, from its upstream end, is rectangular with rounded corners and decreasing in area in a downstream direction until on the line VII-VII it becomes that of a right-angled triangle with rounded corners. The inner wall of the downstream end of the duct intersects the chamber 12 between the inner wall thereof and the inlet valve axis 4. This line of intersection, which is helical, is tangential, at its end remote from the cylinder, to a bore 23 which receives the inlet valve guide 24. A combustion chamber, Fig. 3 (not shown), formed in the piston either concentrically or eccentrically therewith, receives a number of fuel streams 30 from an injector 31 located in the cylinder head either concentrically or eccentrically with the combustion chamber or the cylinder. |
