In a water moderated nuclear reactor, the sample fuel rod 2 is irradiated by the reactor core 9. The intensity of the radiation incident upon the rod 2 is adjusted by lateral displacement of the rod relatively to the core, thereby increasing the amount of moderator between the two. The compartment 5, containing water and the element 2, is pivoted about the axis 6 by the arm 10. The rod 2 is freely mounted at the ball joint 3 and moved laterally away from the core 9 as the compartment 5 is turned anticlockwise about 6. The radioactivity at the rod is determined by argon gas flow in sleeve 37. |
