<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method of motion compensation prediction coding which enables selection of the optimum block size while reducing a total arithmetic operation amount. <P>SOLUTION: A primary searching unit 25 operates the motion vector of a first block at the number of repetitions not more than the first upper limit of a searching algorithm. A minimum solution convergence determining unit 26 determines whether or not the motion vector converges on a minimum solution, and selects the first block as a motion compensation prediction block if a result of determination is positive. If a result of determination of the unit 26 is negative, a secondary searching unit 28 operates each motion vector of the second blocks equivalent to divided blocks of the first block at the number of repetitions not more than the second upper limit of the searching algorithm. An equivalent determining unit 29 determines whether or not each motion vector of the second block is equivalent, selects the first block as a motion compensation prediction block if it is equivalent, and selects the second block as the motion compensation prediction block if it is not equivalent. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
