PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling polymerization, by which polymerization of an aromatic vinyl compound is controlled for many hours and occurrence and adhesion of stains of apparatuses and facilities by the polymer of the vinyl compound in a distillation process, a purification process and a storage process of an aromatic vinyl compound. SOLUTION: The method for controlling polymerization of an aromatic vinyl compound by using a 2,6-dinitrophenol compound in production, purification, distillation, preservation and transportation processes comprises adding 10-10,000ppm of one or more kinds selected from preferably 2,6-dinitrophenol, 2,6-dinitro-4-methylphenol, 2,6-dinitro-4-ethylphenol, 2,6-dinitro-4-sec-butylphenol and 2,6-dinitro-4-tert-butylphenol to the aromatic vinyl compound.
