PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool coated with a hard coating film having excellent heat resistance and wear resistance, which cutting tool can carry out a high speed and high efficiency cutting operation higher than conventional Ti-Al-N film coated cutting tools. SOLUTION: The base material of the cutting tool is made of cemented carbide, cermet, or high speed tool steel and is coated with at least one or more layers of hard coating films. The hard coating film is composed of (Al<SB>a</SB>, Cr<SB>b</SB>, M<SB>c</SB>)(C<SB>1-d</SB>N<SB>d</SB>), where M is one or more kinds of metallic elements and metalloid elements, and respective atomic ratios a, b, c of Al, Cr, M satisfy the following conditions, 0.75≤a≤0.95, 0.05≤b≤0.25, a+b+c=1, and an atomic ratio d of N satisfies the following conditions, 0.5≤d≤1.
