<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an influence of an SBS by suppressing a light source carrier component so as to enlarge a modulation index in relation to an equivalency light source spectral width, and to provide an optical modulator making transmission to a longer distance possible by suppressing one side of a side band spectrum due to a modulation signal and reducing influence of fiber dispersion. <P>SOLUTION: The optical modulator is characterized by having a light branching means 30 to branch incident light with a carrier component into two light waves; an SSB modulating means 31 to optically modulate one branched light wave and to generate a light wave having the carrier component and only the one side of the side band spectrum; an intensity adjusting means 32 to adjust optical intensity of the carrier component of the other branched light wave; a phase adjusting means 33 to adjust the phase of the carrier component with respect to at least one light wave out of the two branched light waves; and a multiplexing means to multiplex the two light waves passed through the SSB modulating means, the intensity adjusting means, and the phase adjusting means and making the multiplexed light the emission light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
