PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten initialization time after disk insertion in an optical disk device. SOLUTION: The optical disk device is so configured that after moving an optical pickup in the radial direction of the disk by a 1st distance which is the sum of a distance between a movable outer peripheral limit position of the optical pickup and a position in a focus-on possible area on an optical disk and a distance between an inner peripheral side limit position and the position in the focus-on possible area, the optical pickup is moved in the return direction by a 2nd distance which is a distance between the outer peripheral limit position and the position in the focus-on possible area or a distance between the inner peripheral limit position and the position in the focus-on possible area, and an objective lens can focus on an object at the position where the optical pickup completes the movement of the 2nd distance.
