PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymeric additive and an adhesive composition containing these additives. SOLUTION: The new polymeric additive disclosed contains a water-based acrylic emulsion polymer (which contains as copolymerization units 0.25 to 99.75% by weight of a monoethylenically unsaturated nonionic 1-10C (meth)acrylic monomer, 0.40 to 99.75% by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated surfactant monomers, and 0.25 to 10% by weight of a monoethylenically unsaturated acid monomer), with the above water-based emulsion polymer having a Tg of -100 to 100°C and an weight average molecular weight of 1,000 to 40,000. This polymeric additive has a more improved balance among the tack, adhesion, plasticity, peeling strength and water-whitening resistance as compared to other polymer additives.
