A method of treating a ball bearing comprises absorbing nitrogen into the ball and race surfaces so that they become hardened and porous, and then partially coating surfaces with soft metal. The method of coating comprises adding soft metal powder into the bearing and operating the bearing so that soft metal is impregnated by pressure into the surfaces. The soft metal may be silver or lead. The bearing is used in vacuo. |
