1,089,952. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. SOCIETE PARISIENNE D'ETUDES SPECIALS TERMELEC. March 30, 1965 [Jan. 28, 1965], No. 13458/65. Heading B5K. A device for welding thermoplastic sheets A, B together comprises an endless band 12 made of a material which will not adhere to the sheets A, B to prevent adhesion of these sheets to the welding tool, the band 12 being of a length so as to have an unguided floating portion whereby it can adhere momentarily to the welded materials. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, hot gas supplied from a compressor unit is blown through a nozzle member 3 at one end of a body 2 on to the sheets A, B. A frame 4 secured to the body 2 carries in a bearing 5 a shaft 6 driven by a motor 7 and which carries a drum 8. Two rollers 11 are rotatably mounted on a pin 10 one on each side of a plate 9 carrying the pin 10 and are slightly downwardly inclined to guide the band 12 which runs in a passage 13. A pressure shoe 13a is formed at the lower part of the passage 13. In use, the device is placed on the sheets A, B with the band 12 in the position of Fig. 1 (not shown) and is moved in the direction of the arrow F1. The band 12 adheres momentarily to the sheets A, B over a distance D, Fig. 1. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the rollers 11, the drum 8 and the passage 13 are positioned to allow filler rod material 40 to be introduced. The material 40 is preheated in the passage 13. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the passage 13 is omitted and a rotatably mounted welding wheel 43 applies pressure to the sheets A, B through the band 12. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), welding is effected by a heated roller 15 engaging the band 12. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the sheets A, B are welded by an ultrasonic generator 20 terminating in a nose 21 acting through an endless band 28 guided by a driven drum 25 and idler rollers 26, 29, 30. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), a high frequency continuous welding machine comprises two drums 50, 51 around which pass bands 52, 52a guided by rollers 53, 54 and 55, 56, respectively. |
