A method of controlling an engine start in a hybrid vehicle

A vehicle 10 and a method for starting an engine 12 in the vehicle 10 are disclosed. The vehicle 10 has a motor/generator 14, a disconnect clutch 22 disposed between the engine 12 and the motor/generator 14 and a transmission 16 disposed between the motor/generator 14 and the vehicle drive wheels 18. The transmission 16 includes an input clutch 36 which is selectively engageable for facilitating torque transfer between the motor/generator 14 and the vehicle drive wheels 18. When an engine start is requested, the transmission input clutch 36 is partially disengaged to at least partially isolate the vehicle drive wheels 18 from engine torque disturbances when the engine 12 is started.
