The method involves performing two fuel injections (11, 12) at instants situated on both sides of top dead center, during regeneration periods of nitrogen oxide trap, at crankcase angles lesser than 25 degrees, coupled with an exhaust gas recirculation rate higher than 40 percent. The quantity of injected fuel during the last injection is lower than 10 mm3>/cp/l.
