A heat exchanger comprises axially extending rows of finned sections arranged on each of a plurality of tubes, the tubes being so disposed that the centre of each tube coincides with the apex of a regular polygon (e.g. a square or a triangle) formed by imaginary lines joining the centres of adjacent tubes, with one row of finned sections from each tube forming a star configuration with a row of finned sections from each adjacent tube, the centre of the star coinciding with the centre of the polygon. The finned sections may comprise rows of single or double fins secured to the tube wall, and each finned section has a part thereof so disposed obliquely to the tube axis, as to impart a tangential component to the fluid passing axially of the tube, and on each tube, the tangential component imparted by each finned section of one row is opposite to that imparted by the finned sections of adjacent rows. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement of three finned tubes 1, 1d, 1e in a jacket 12. In this case each finned section comprises a double fin welded to the tube wall and made by slitting and bending a strip (Figs. 9-11). 2c<SP>1</SP>, 2d, 2e and 2f show different forms of the double fin. The circles 4 denote the tangential components imparted to the fluid by the fins. 15 is a tube spacer to correctly position the tubes, and 18 are baffles to ensure that the bulk of the fluid passes over the tubes. Cleaning devices may be disposed in the fin-free spaces 17. Other fin and tube arrangements in which each fin section comprises a row of single fins are described (Figs. 1 to 3 and 5 to 7).
