The system has a sensor to detect characteristic value of respiration of a passenger using an oxygen mask. A control device individually determines need for oxygen by the passenger, based on the characteristic value, while taking into account flight altitude. A solenoid valve actuated by the control device sends a quantity of oxygen corresponding to the oxygen need, to the mask. An independent claim is also included for a method of determining need for oxygen by a passenger of an aircraft during supply of emergency oxygen.
