The device has a laser source (2), a projection unit (3) and a volume hologram (4) between the laser source and the projection unit, where the volume hologram is a reflection hologram or a transmission hologram. Phase samples producing speckle samples are stored in the volume hologram, where the phase samples are selected independently from each other based on polarization of light from the volume hologram. An independent claim is also included for a method for suppressing an image speckle.
