PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a large cost reduction and large miniaturization by commonalization of components in an electronic ballast for two lamps or multiple lamps. SOLUTION: A series circuit of switching elements S1 and S2 which are alternately turned on by a low frequency, a series circuit of switching elements S3 and S4 for choppers, and a series circuit of switching elements S5 and S6 are connected to parallel, a discharge lamp 4a is connected through a current limiting element L2a between the connecting point of the switching elements S3 and S4 and the connecting point of the switching elements S1 and S2, and a discharge lamp 4b is connected through a current limiting element L2b between the connecting point of the switching elements S5 and S6 and the connecting point of the switching elements S1 and S2. A discharge lamp lighting device for multiple lamps has an output control circuit 31a for alternating the high frequency chopper operation of the switching element S3 and the high frequency chopper operation of the switching element S4 in a low frequency and an output control circuit 31b for alternating the high frequency chopper operation of the switching element S5 and the high frequency chopper operation of the switching element S6 in a low frequency.
