PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve spring retainer for an internal combustion engine capable of improving strength and rigidity of a spring bearing flange part by not heavily stressing a junction corner between a cylindrical part and a spring bearing flange part and by preventing an inner periphery of the upper end of the valve spring from contacting the junction corner. SOLUTION: In the valve spring retainer for the internal combustion engine having the cylindrical part 5 with which the upper end part of the valve spring 7 is fitted, while it is fixed on the axial end part of the engine valve 1 and the spring bearing flange part 6 on which an end turn end part 7a of the valve spring 7 is welded with pressure, extending outwardly from the upper end part of the cylindrical part 5, an annular recessed groove 10 which re-enters radially on the end part outer peripheral side of the cylindrical part 5 is provided so that the top end of the groove 10 is inwardly continuous than the welding part of the end turn end part 7a to the bottom face of the spring bearing flange part 6.
