PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forklift capable of surely locking or unlocking a pallet in response to a distance between the pallet and a pallet loading surface when lifting and lowering the pallet. SOLUTION: In this forklift 1, a distance between a load supporting device 2 and a pallet loading surface 10 to be loaded with the pallet 4 is detected by a detecting device 8, and a pallet lock device 6 is operated to lock or unlock on the basis of an output of the detecting device 8. Furthermore, the forklift 1 can determine existence of the pallet 4 by detecting whether a pallet detecting means is brought in contact with the pallet 4 or not, an expensive proximity sensor and wiring for the same is unnecessary.
