A method of treating an article or area to render it repellent to animals comprises applying an aliphatic or alicyclic ketone containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule. The ketone may be applied with a conventional liquid or solid carrier, but is preferably in the form of a sprayable composition comprising the ketone, a solvent or a non-solvent together with a surface active agent and a propellant (e.g. propane, halogenated hydrocarbon, nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide). The preferred ketones are methyl (nonyl, heptyl and heptadecyl) ketones and 4 - t - amyl cyclohexanone; other ketones are exemplified and listed. The repellent may be applied to paper, cloth, bushes, shrubs, trees, stalls, couches and chairs, and may contain other active ingredients - such as miticides (methoxychlor), insecticides (DDT, DDE, dieldrin, malathion), herbicides (2,4 - D; 2, 4, 5 - T), growth regulants (gibberellins), fungicides (thiocarbamates), and animal or insect repellents.
