A valve and seat sub-assembly is fitted to a body 12 having an open cylindrical valve chamber 16, 17, 18 with axially spaced inlet and outlet ports 20, 22. The assembly comprises a tubular member 26 which fits the chamber and has inlet and outlet ports communicating with the ports 20, 22. The member 26 carries a slidably mounted valve member 50 co-operating with a seat 38 of resilient material such as nylon retained radially by a ring 34. An operating rod 58 is detachably connected to a screw actuating stem 82, 86, the connection being rotatable and including a nylon bearing 90. The sub-assembly is retained by a bonnet 76. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tubular member (106) is secured to a body (122) of a second sub-assembly including an actuating diaphragm (140). The valve is responsive to outlet pressure communicated to the diaphragm from an outlet throat (160) through a passage (158, 156, 155) and constitutes a pressure reducing valve. The diaphragm is loaded by a constant fluid pressure through an orifice (144) from loading chamber (146).
