The procedure involves verification of the condition "clutch-on" during the startup position of clutch actuator (45), stored and adjusted before or during shut down, is compared with a positioning recorded during a given course of motion of clutch actuator after startup by means of a stretching measurement, which takes place in a partial surface of the course of movement. The condition "clutch-on" is known, if the extent of the comparison is in a predetermined tolerance surface. An independent claim is also included for the device for controlling of a motor vehicle.
