[Also in Division H3] A magnetic data storage device comprises a magnetic core member having a first write conductor which when energized produces a first field resulting in a remanent flux state of given orientation in the core member, means being provided for producing another remanent flux state of the same orientation but different distribution, these means applying the first field and a smaller second field transverse to the first field and terminating after it. In the storage device shown in Fig. 1a a " 0 " is stored by a saturating pulse in conductor W alone which results in the clockwise flux distribution shown in Fig. 4a. A " 1 " is stored by applying a pulse in conductor W and a limited overlapping pulse in B which results in the different but still clockwise flux distribution shown in Fig. 5a. A saturating read-out pulse in W then produces an output in B for a " 1 " but merely a slight noise for a " 0 ". The write pulse in B is not large enough to produce any remanent flux change in the absence of a saturating pulse in W. A separate read-out conductor parallel to B may be used. Only part 12 of core member 10 or alternatively the remainder of member 10 need have appreciable flux remanence. In a magnetic memory the word conductors W 1 -W 3 (Fig. 6) may be energized for read-out, switches 16.1-16.3 and 18.1-18.3 connecting row conductors B to loads 22.
