A latch assembly comprises a case 10 and a latch bolt structure having a stem 22 and a head 28 of generally cylindrical form but having at least one chordal face 29 or 30, a removable face plate 15 on the case, the inner surface of the face plate being formed to provide a cylindrical inwardly extending barrel 19 concentric with the axis of the stem 22 and receiving, supporting and guiding the head, a removable finish plate 38 overlying the face plate, the finish plate being formed with an aperture 41 registerable with the barrel 19 and formed with opposite chordal boundaries 42, 43 selectively cooperative with the chordal face of the bolt head to restrain the head against turning movement. As shown, the head is screwed on to the stem 22 and is retained hereon by a pin 36 which cooperates with a flat 34 on the stem to permit rotation of the head between positions on the stem 180 degrees apart, the head being retained in either of these positions by subsequent fitting of the finish plate 38. In another arrangement, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the head is a sliding fit on the stem and is retained hereon by cooperating pins and grooves.</p> |
