In a method for controlling a cooler (100) for piece-form material (A), where cooling gas is passed from below through (A) on a grid (1) subdivided into several aeration regions (3a) - (3f) and the gas volume flows of the aeration elements are individually adjustable using air distributor flaps, the desired positions of all flaps for at least two operating situations (each coordinated with a first operating parameter (I)) are stored. The value of (I) is continuously measured during operation; the actual value is compared with the stored values; and the positions of all flaps are adapted when another stored operating situation is encountered. An independent claim is included for a corresponding cooler (100), including a control device (8) for carrying out the controlling procedure as above.
