An intake valve (52) admits air into a combustion chamber. An exhaust gas intake valve (50) is opened during a portion of an engine intake stroke when the intake valve is opened and when the pressure of exhaust gas is greater than the pressure of gas in the combustion chamber. The exhaust gas intake valve admits exhaust gas into the combustion chamber to establish internal exhaust gas recirculation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a four stroke, internal combustion, compression-ignition engine; and (B) a method for reducing nitrogen monoxide.
