PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a console type electrophotographic copying machine in which the closing operation of an ADF is easily performed in a position where even a leg-disabled person in a wheelchair can easily perform a closing operation without affecting the opening or closing of the ADF designed for use in a standing position. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image reader and an automatic document feeder vertically opened or closed via hinges fixed to the rear end of the upper face of the main body of the image reader. The image forming apparatus is provided with a closing auxiliary handle having a semi-circular arcuate portion, which is freely rotatably supported on the right side of the automatic document feeder. When the automatic document feeder is moved downward, the closing auxiliary handle comes into contact with the upper face of the copying machine main body by gravity, and also the semi-circular arcuate portion evades while rotating and sliding forward.
