PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter for expanding the range of choices of material used for a pinion 6 and improving strength and durability of the pinion 6. SOLUTION: A twist angle between a pinion stroke S1 and a helical spline connection part is set so that the pinion 6 can be rotated to a position where the pinion 6 can be meshed with a ring gear 38 after the pinion 6, which is pushed out in a direction opposite to a motor together with a clutch, abuts on an end face of the ring gear 38 and before a motor contact is closed. The pinion 6 that has been rotated to the position where the pinion 6 can be meshed with the ring gear 38 is meshed with the ring gear 38 by a reaction force accumulated in a pinion spring 25. Since it is not necessary to forcibly rotate the pinion 6 to the position where the pinion 6 can be meshed with the ring gear 38 by the torque of a motor and the pinion 6 does not receive a big impact force, the strength and durability of the pinion and ring gear 38 are improved.
