<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light weight and small sized gas generator which can be easily and inexpensively manufactured and securely prevent unintended occurrence (resonance ignition) in a combustion process in respective other combustion chamber in a multistage gas generator. <P>SOLUTION: The gas generator for an airbag module of an automobile has two generator stages which can be ignited independently of one another and each of which includes at least one igniter, at least one propellant charge and at least one combustion chamber in its own pressure housing. The two generator stages are arranged at least partly in a common filter housing together with a common filter unit arranged outside the pressure housing and a first generator stage is made in annular shape.
