PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus for photographing a subject by appropriate exposure. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus 10 comprises a lens 11 for collecting the light of the subject; a diaphragm 12 for adjusting the light amount of the subject light; an imaging element 13 for converting the subject light into an electric signal; an imaging element driving means 14 for driving the imaging element 13; an analog pre-processing part 15 for removing noise and adjusting gain; an A/D converter 16 for converting an analog signal into a digital signal; a Y/C processing means 17 for performing a luminance signal processing and a color difference signal processing; and a video signal processor 20 for processing a video signal. The video signal processor 20 comprises a subject detecting means 21 for detecting the existence area of a subject image from a luminance signal which is outputted from the Y/C processing means 17; a photometry area setting means 22 for setting the area of the subject image as a photometry area; and an exposure control means 23 for controlling the exposure by adjusting the diaphragm amount of the diaphragm 12.
