[Also in Division B3] A device for enabling a pipe to be drilled while under pressure comprises a thin removable blade 11 inserted through a slit 10 in a part of the device. The body 1 of the device is clamped against the pipe with an intervening saddle sealing washer and the blade 11 is inserted through the slit 10. The blade co-operates with an 0-ring 7 having an extension lip 8. When the pipe has been drilled by a drilling machine mounted in a threaded bushing 2, the blade is inserted and a branch pipe fitted. The blade is then removed and a lead seal 15 is caulked into the slit. In a modification, the 0-ring (7a), Fig. 6 (not shown), is embedded in sealing means (17) and the slit is closed by a strip (15a) secured by screws. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), there are two 0-rings and a resilient seal. In Fig. 8 (not shown), a U-section ring is used and in Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), split gaskets are fitted, that in the latter embodiment being sealed additionally by tightening a screw 24. In Fig. 11 (not shown), the saddle washer extends upwardly to form the seal against the blade. |
