PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take a still image photograph while utilizing the wide dynamic range of an image sensor. SOLUTION: When a release button is half-pushed, exposure value is set at 8 EV and the luminance of an object in the range of 4-9.5 EV is measured on the basis of the exposure results from a CCD image sensor. Subsequently, the exposure value is set at 12 EV, 16 EV and the luminance of the object is measured in each range of 9.5-13.5 EV, 13.5-18 EV. The photography screen is divided into a plurality of small regions and the luminance of the object is measured for each small region. Luminance of the object in the measurement range is extracted for each measurement of the luminance of the object and an appropriate exposure value is calculated according to the luminance them.
